Guidelines
Aotearoa Ethnic Network » Guidelines

This list has been set up so that you can send and receive information about issues, activities and announcements relating to ethnic communities in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Please use the list to exchange information and make announcements specifically relating to our ethnic communities. Those involved in delivering Government or NGO services to ethnic communities can get in touch with us to let us know about consultation and to provide information. The advantage of a mailing list is that the information comes straight to you, there's no need to go looking for it. Of course, the disadvantage of email is that there's too much of it. So, one of aims of this list is that it becomes a one-stop-shop for distribution - send it once and lots of people will receive it (of course, there is always going to be some duplication).

How it works

If you are subscribed to the list you will receive all the emails sent to the list's email address (either as they are sent or as a daily digest, depending on the option you selected). Anyone can join the list, so please pass the details on to others that you know would find this useful! All new members must be approved to avoid spam (new members who have a hotmail or yahoo email address, can expect to be questioned since these addresses generate more junk mail).

Who can send an email to the list

Only members can send emails. Any posting by a non-member will be rejected automatically. This means that you must send emails from the email address at which you are subscribed.

When should you send an email

Whenever you have anything useful or interesting to share with others in our ethnic communities.

Sending an email

To post to everyone on this list, members can send an email to: aen[at]aen.org.nz (postings from non-members are automatically rejected).

Postings must be relevant to the group and the material must not be likely to cause offence. Your post is not moderated. You are responsible for what you send and the list owner has no liability or responsibility for anything posted via this mailing list. The basic rules for postings are as follows:

  1. Postings that relate directly to ethnic communities and which would not be considered offensive are appropriate for AEN.
  2. All postings to AEN must have some relevancy to ethnic communities. Generic postings with little or no relevance to ethnic communities are discouraged.
  3. Discussion and debate are important and a relevant part of AEN.
  4. When in doubt, seek advice before posting. The onus remains on the poster to consider the relevance and appropriateness of their posting and they are responsible for it. If in any doubt, ask a list moderator or another list member for their opinion before posting.
  5. The list remains unmoderated and self-regulation by list members is promoted as the best option.
  6. If another person’s posting raises issues for you in terms of points 1 to 4, refer to point 5!
Please DO send announcements about events, meetings, consultations, launches, celebrations and please do post email message that you think are important to the ethnic community. Please DO NOT send jokes, advertising material or anything offensive. If you're attaching a file, consider that some people might have slow Internet connections - so try and keep file sizes small!

There is a limit on the maximum size of the email (currently 250Kb). Emails over this limit will be held for moderator approval and will most likely be rejected. If you have a large attachment, consider whether it really needs to be sent or whether images can be removed.

Replying to an email

By default, your reply will go to the person who sent the email NOT the list. To reply to the list, change the 'to' address or add the AEN address to the reply. Reply to the list if you think your response is useful to everyone.

Your privacy

Only the list administrator(s) can see who belongs to the list. No information that identifies individual members will be passed on to others and it will not be made public. The only time your identify will be revealed to other list members is when you send an email to the list (you will appear as the sender of the email).

Leaving the list or changing your options

If you want to unsubscribe, please go to the list management page and follow the instructions. If you want to change your membership options, such as how you receive mail or your email address, again, visit the list management page. Please don't email the list and please don't email the list administrator unless you're genuinely stuck.

Promoting the list

Please promote the list - the more members we have the better our networks. This list is about sharing, so let's share it! If you know of people in your networks that would be interested and aren't on the list, let them know about it. They can join by visiting the website and signing up (just like you did!).
